EMS DIVISION
The Goshen Fire Department EMS division is
headed by EMS Chief Kit Castetter. Chief Castetter has been a
member of the fire department since 1990 and has been head of EMS since
2000. He is a Nationally Registered EMT-Paramedic and a Registered
Nurse.
GFD-EMS responds to approximately 3000 EMS calls each year.
The EMS division also services the surrounding townships providing ALS
care when needed. GFD-EMS is the first department in Indiana to
staff ambulances with two paramedics per unit. We currently have 3
ALS
ambulances in service and one reserve
BLS ambulance that is converted to ALS when needed. The EMS
division under the supervision of Chief Castetter is continuously
improving the skills of all the firefighters on the fire department.
While all members are required to be certified to EMT-Basic Level we
currently have 26 paramedics to staff the three ambulances.
All Goshen Paramedics are required to attend training courses in
advanced cardiac life support, pediatric life support, trauma life
support and must complete 8 intubations per year. Paramedics
obtain these skills from outside classes and visits to local hospital
operating rooms to keep their skills sharp.
All Basic EMT's are also required to maintain state certification and
train alongside with paramedics to maintain their skills. Major
medical calls are responded to by both ambulance and engine of the area
station. Through this teamwork all patients can be confident that
they will receive the highest level of care when the need arises.
