The GFD Training Division is dedicated to providing the
highest quality training to its members. the divisions administers over
7500 hours of training per year. On average each firefighter receives 275
hours of classroom or hands-on-training each year on various topics from
basic firefighting skills to advanced skills such as confined space rescue and
auto extrication. The lead instructor of the department is Captain Scott McCrindle. Captain McCrindle has been with the Goshen Fire Department
since 1995 and is an Indiana State certified Fire Instructor II/III and Paramedic
along with numerous other certifications in other specialties. Captain
McCrindle also has to his credit a publication in the fire service periodical "Fire
Engineering" on creating RIT packs on a tight budget. Through his instruction
and life experiences he teaches Probationary Firefighters the tools they need to
be successful and experienced firefighters new skills to perform their duties.
In 2004 the Goshen Fire department began developing an off
site training facility at the city's new water tower. A class room was
built on the second story to accommodate training for GFD as well as other
departments in the city. In 2005 a flash over chamber was added to train
firefighters in recognizing and observing a flashover in relative safety.
In 2006 a confined space trainer was designed by Captain McCrindle and the
materials were donated by Aggregate Industries of Goshen. Plans are under
way to add a flammable liquids pit, a roof ventilation simulator, and a training
tower. Water supply will not be a problem as the site is also occupied by
a 2.5 million gallon water tower.
